Alacare founder's Day Raises money for needy patients

Alacare CEO Susan B. Brouillette, MPH, MBA, Graham Beard (center) and Alacare President John G. Beard, JD, MBA, address the crowd at Alacare's Founder's Day.

Hoover, AL- Alacare Home Health & Hospice celebrated its 3rd Annual Founder's Day on Saturday, May 5, 2007, at Regions Park in Hoover (formerly Hoover Metropolitan Stadium). The proceeds of the event, which included a barbecue buffet and a Birmingham Barons baseball game, went to the Hospice & Home Health Fund of Alabama (HHHFA).

"My father, Charles D. Beard, Jr., founded both Alacare and the Hospice & Home Health Fund of Alabama," said Susan B. Brouillette, MPH, MBA, Alacare's CEO. "He was a strong advocate of high quality home care for the elderly and terminally ill. When he realized that nurses were digging into their own pockets to pay for necessities like food and medicine for their needy patients, he set up the Hospice & Home Health Fund of Alabama."

Set up as a not-for-profit 401(c)(3) organization in 1990, the HHHFA removed that burden from the nurses while providing grants in aid to many home health and hospice patients in dire need throughout Alabama.

"Founder's Day is always a good time, but the main objective is to raise funds for the HHHFA so we can assist even more patients," says Alacare President John G. Beard, JD, MBA, son of the company's founder. "This year the event raised $8,000 to help some of the people in the state who need it most."

After the barbecue buffet, a coconut cake contest was held. "My Granddad loved coconut cake, so this is really done in his honor," said Graham Beard, the third generation of the Beard family to work at Alacare. Alacare employees submitted their best recipes, and Louise Beard, David Brouillette, and Alacare Chief Operating Officer Mark Cook, RN, MBA, served as judges.

Charles D. Beard, Jr., died in 2001, but his legacy lives on through both Alacare and the HHHFA.

"Dad always said, ‘You are your brother's keeper, whether you know it or not,'" said John Beard.
