Alacare Hospice Volunteers in Alexander City Just Keep Giving
Alexander City, Alabama-The Alacare Friends of Hospice from Alexander City meets monthly. These volunteers-a group of between six and eight women-have made it their mission to make the lives of hospice patients a little better. Items they have made for patients include Thanksgiving fruit baskets, manicure sets with homemade lotion, and holiday memory books. The goal is not only to make nice things, but things the patients can really use.
These women, led by their volunteer president, Anna McCain, also maintain a memorial garden in the city park. The area has a bench and trees, and the group plants something new there every year in memory of hospice patients who have died.
Some of the Alacare Friends of Hospice spend one-on-one time with hospice patients as well. They sit with the patients, keeping them company and offering comfort. This allows the patient's family members to get away for a couple of hours to run errands or attend to personal business.
Alacare's Volunteer Coordinator for Alexander City overseeing the group's activities is Barbara Stauffer. She is impressed by these volunteers' commitment to their work.
"They originally volunteered for a hospital hospice program," Stauffer says. "When that program shut down, they decided that they were not ready to give up their work with hospice patients. They came to Alacare as a group and we are exceedingly lucky to have them. Among them, they have a total of more than 100 years of volunteering experience. I am so impressed with their compassion and dedication."
Anyone interested in joining the Alacare Hospice Volunteer Program can call Barbara Stauffer at (334) 741 - 9952 or Lance Lee, Alacare's Volunteer Services Manager, at 1-800-348-6180.
