Celebrating the True Meaning of Christmas
Every year, the Hospice and Home Health Fund of Alabama (HHHFA) celebrates the real meaning of Christmas by lending a helping hand to some of Alabama’s neediest homebound patients. Since the staff working in the field best know which patients can most benefit from some extra help, the Fund distributes thousands of dollars among the twenty-one Alacare Home Health & Hospice offices across the state.
The HHHFA has just made its donation for this year, and the branches are in the process of finding ways to bring comfort and joy to their patients. In previous years, the generosity of donors to the Fund has provided such basic items as food, toiletries, towels, bed linens, pajamas and house shoes. There have also been purchases that are a little less ordinary, but no less appreciated.
“Last year one of our nurses purchased a tall stool for a patient to use in his kitchen,” says Carol Womack, RN, Alacare’s Birmingham Branch Director. “He was a veteran who had been in an accident and was not able to stand. When he saw the stool, he cried. He said it changed his life, because now he would be able to cook and wash his dishes, making him more independent.”
These are small things, things that most of us take for granted, but they mean the world to the sick and elderly who have so little. Because the items bought are so appreciated, but generally not very expensive, no donation to the HHHFA is too small. To donate to the HHHFA, contact Rhonda Elliot, Hospice & Home Health Fund of Alabama, 4752 Highway 280 East, Birmingham, AL 35242 or call 205-981-8400 or 1-800-852-4724, ext. 8586.
