Alacare’s award-winning volunteer program serves an integral role in the company’s continual commitment to the highest quality service to its patients. With enough committed, caring volunteers, Alacare is able to extend its reach across the state, within homes in small towns and large, on weekdays, holidays, nights and weekends. Krystan Sivley has been honored with the Alacare “Volunteer of the Month” award. A student at Springville High School, 15-year-old Krystan began volunteering at the beginning of June. Assisting with administrative work was a family affair for Krystan, whose mother Pamela Decker is a valued administrative assistant for the company’s Dewberry Building corporate headquarters. Giving 51.5 hours of volunteer time, Krystan displayed her outstanding commitment to volunteering when she came to work and continued to make phone calls after having jaw surgery, completing nearly 60 calls during the month, including calling families of former patients to include them in a memorial service to honor their family members. Valeri Cowart, who serves as the Hospice Volunteer Coordinator for the Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Jasper, Cullman, Decatur, and Huntsville branches, designated Krystan as an exceptional worker. Says Cowart, “I am always open to ideas about ways our community can assist our patients.” Cowart’s goals to expand the volunteer program’s reach not only through the number and diversity of local volunteers but also through the services they offer was greatly helped by Krystan’s administrative support.
