Attention Healthcare Providers: News about Medicare and PECOS

Did You Know…

Whether you are a CMS participating physician or not, enrolling in PECOS will enable your patients to receive alacare services and other ancillary services provided to qualified Medicare patients.

PECOS or the Internet-based Provider Enrollment, Chain and Ownership System is an easy way to enroll.      https://pecos.cms.hhs.gov

A physician that has opted out of Medicare must submit information to the Medicare contractor regarding their opt out status, and be entered into PECOS. This permits the physician to order services for Medicare beneficiaries even though the physician will not be billing the program.

A physician can have one of the following statuses in Medicare enrollment.

-Enrolled as a participating physician (accepts Medicare payment in full (accepts assignment)

-Enrolled as a non-participating physician (does not accept Medicare payment in full and may charge the Medicare beneficiary the difference in charges up to a certain amount (does not accept assignment)

-Opt out physician (does not bill the Medicare program, but has been approved to order or refer services for Medicare beneficiaries)

CMS requires enrollment by July 6th, 2010
